Who are we?

My name is Silja, 38 years old and worked in Belgium mainly as a social worker with refugees. I love to get in touch with people of different nationalities and am curious about other languages, cultures, customs…And this social aspect is now also returning as a hostess of Casa Gemeos. For questions about administration, tips about local restaurants and trips, feel free to contact me!

Jan is 54 years old and loves gardening, baking and punk music. Big chance that he will serve you something tasty while you’re sitting on one of the sun terraces among the home-grown, exotic plants… He’s mainly occupied with the maintenance of the accommodations, swimming pool and garden.

Why we emigrated in 2019?

For the adventure! What is it like to get out of your comfort zone and be dependent on each other? To learn a new language? Build up a new network of friends? Set up your own business in another country? What is it like to be a newcomer “foreigner” somewhere? … On 31 May 2019, the first guests came to enjoy the hospitable “amanha” culture of Portugal.

Why Portugal – Aljubarrota?

Portugal has it all: sun, sea, mountains and only 2.5 hours away from our family and friends in Belgium. The Portuguese are very proud of their country and are happy to tell you more about their dishes and the history of our village. We feel really welcome here!

Aljubarrota is situated in a beautiful green area with a view on the mountains National Park of Serras de Aire e Candeeiros, Casa Gemeos is situated on the edge of a quiet residential area and yet close to tourist attractions such as the monasteries of Alcobaça and Batalha. And also only 15min drive from the beach. A wide range of activities for an active holiday or a relaxing stay.

Where does the name Casa Gemeos come from?

The holiday home is not just called “the twin house“. The two houses are identical and built in mirror image, like a real Siamese twin. Each has the same layout. Hostess Silja is also part of identical twins. Host Jan in turn is “Twins” of constellation. And when you look at the twin logo, it looks like an upside-down bed…
